Smart environments are interactive spaces instrumented by intelligent devices, sensors, actuators, and intelligent monitoring systems that allow users to control and automate objects. In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, these environments benefit from IoT-powered technologies to improve users’ lives. Nowadays, the lack of collaboration and cooperation between the different elements of the smart environment is a big challenge. In this paper, we propose a decentralized architecture based on IoT-agent technology that allows cooperation between different agents of smart environments. For this purpose, a distributed protocol is proposed for cooperation and negotiation between agents. As a use case, we take a smart university residence and seek to collaborate between the different rooms to improve student life. Therefore, we have implemented this architecture through a 3D simulation using the 3D Unity platform in combination with the JADE platform for multi-agent system.
